Pope Francis Issues Letter to All Catholics

On Sunday, November 24th, the Solemnity of Christ the King and the close of the Year of Faith, Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Exortation, a letter of encouragement, to the Catholic faithful around the world.  The letter is titled THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL.  He reminds us that there is great joy when we bring the Gospel of Jesus to others, especially in our world that is saddened by values that do not bring meaning and inner fulfillment.  This letter can be found at downloaded at the Vatican’s Website:

It would make excellent reading for Advent as we prepare for Christmas.  By reading 12 paragraphs a day, you can complete the letter by Christmas!

Pope Francis promulgates his first encyclical letter

On Saturday, June 29, 2013, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul,  Pope Francis issued his first encyclical letter, LUMEN FIDEI, THE LIGHT OF FAITH.  He completed the work that was begun by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on the topic of faith to coincide with the Year of Faith.  The first three chapters of this meditation on faith are clearly the work of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI while the final chapter has the theology of Pope Francis that points to faith as the motivation to reach out to the poor and to those who suffer.
